What does a tattoo cost? How the price comes together.

"What does a tattoo cost?" is the question we get most. The honest answer: it depends on four things. Below we explain which, so you can ask for an estimate that is actually right.

1. Size and detail

A small fineline symbol takes less time than a realistic portrait the size of a hand. It is not only the surface that counts, but above all the detail: shadows, textures and fine lines take time and concentration.

2. The placement

Some places are easier to tattoo than others. Ribs, feet, hands and the neck are more sensitive and need more breaks and precision. That can make the session longer.

3. Style

Realism and portraits are often built up over several sessions. Fineline and lettering are usually done in one session. Colour generally takes more time than black & grey.

4. Number of sessions

For bigger pieces, such as a sleeve or a back piece, we work in sessions of a few hours. You pay per session and you know roughly how many are needed beforehand.

How to ask for an honest estimate

• Send a description of your idea and references if you have them.
• Take a photo of the placement in daylight.
• Give the size in centimetres, for instance with a ruler in the picture.
• Say whether you prefer black & grey or colour.
